Knife Throw Timing Windows From Flight Time and Collision Angles

In Knife Throw you do not miss because you aimed at a knife. You miss because the log kept turning during the 156 milliseconds your knife spends in the air. The engine fixes that flight time and every collision angle, so the lead you need can be computed exactly.

The flight time in Knife Throw is fixed

The knife leaves at 0.78 of the canvas height, which is 748.8 in design units. It sticks once it reaches the log rim plus the 22 unit stick depth, which is 467.6. The flight distance is 281.2 units, and the throw speed is a constant 1800 units per second. Flight time is 281.2 divided by 1800, about 156 milliseconds, on every single throw at every level.

The log does not wait. The landing angle is computed as the log angle negated plus 90 degrees, because the knife always enters at the bottom of the screen. Whatever the log does during those 156 milliseconds moves your landing point.

How much the log turns before impact

The rotation pattern is a list of segments. Normal segments run at 0.6 to 1.3 times the base speed, where base speed is 1.5 plus 0.18 radians per second per level. Reverse segments appear from level 2 and run at 0.5 to 0.9 times base in the opposite direction. Pause segments appear from level 3 and hold zero speed for 0.3 to 0.8 seconds.

Multiply the worst normal speed by the flight time.

1. Level 1 caps a normal segment near 2.18 radians per second, so the log turns up to 0.34 radians, about 19.5 degrees, while your knife flies.

2. Level 10 caps near 4.29 radians per second, so the log turns up to 0.67 radians, about 38 degrees, during one flight.

Aim at the gap as it will be, offset against the direction of spin by those amounts. When the current segment reverses, flip the sign of your lead.

The 9.2 degree collision rule

Two knives collide when their angles on the log differ by less than 0.16 radians, which is 9.2 degrees. Each stuck knife therefore blocks a 18.3 degree zone, 9.2 degrees on each side of it. Plan placements so neighboring knives sit at least 0.32 radians apart.

The pre-stuck obstacle knives follow that rule by construction. They are spaced evenly, 2π divided by their count, with a random jitter of up to 0.3 radians each way. Six pre-stuck knives at 60 degree spacing still leave a worst-case 25.6 degree clear gap between neighbors. The generator never blocks a lane outright.

Level layout numbers. Normal levels give 5 knives, rising to 8 as floor(level/3) grows. Boss levels, every fifth one, give 6 to 8 knives plus an apple placed at least 0.4 radians from every pre-stuck knife. The apple pops when your knife lands within 0.22 radians of it, which is wider than the knife collision zone, so a blade placed just past an apple still counts for the apple.

When to release the knife

Convert the mechanics into three release rules.

1. If the current segment is a pause, release as soon as your entry point sits in a gap. The landing angle cannot move for 0.3 to 0.8 seconds, and 156 milliseconds of flight fits inside that window with room to spare.

2. If the log spins at constant speed, release when the gap you want is 0.34 radians or more before the entry point at level 1, scaling up to about 0.67 radians at level 10, measured against the spin direction.

3. If the segment is about to end, wait. Segment durations run 0.8 to 2.5 seconds, and a speed change mid-flight breaks any lead you computed.

Only one knife flies at a time, and each throw is final. Take the pause when it is offered.

Streaks, golden knives, and score

Each stuck knife is worth 1 point. A streak of 5 or more consecutive stuck knives raises that to 2 per knife. Every 8th knife thrown across the whole run is golden and pays 3 times, so 3 points plain or 6 with an active streak. Clearing a level adds the level number. The streak dies with any collision, so the multiplier rewards the same patience that keeps spacing legal.

Knife Throw checklist

  • [ ] Identified the current rotation segment type, normal, reverse, or pause.
  • [ ] Computed the lead, 0.34 radians early game, up to 0.67 late game.
  • [ ] Confirmed the landing spot keeps 0.32 radians from the nearest knife.
  • [ ] Checked knife count left, and saved one throw for the widest gap.
  • [ ] On boss levels, placed the apple angle 0.22 radians into the plan.
  • [ ] Thrown during pauses whenever one is available.

The honest downside. Late levels stack up to 6 pre-stuck knives plus your own throws, and reverse segments flip your lead mid-flight. Timing windows derived here assume the current segment holds its speed, and a segment boundary inside your 156 milliseconds of flight invalidates the aim with no visual warning. Practice the [Knife Throw game](/en/knife-hit) and log your collision angles if you disagree with the 0.16 radian figure. Your stuck-knife spacing data would refine the release rules above.
