Thumbnail grabbers advertise 4K covers. YouTube actually serves every public video a fixed set of four JPG files, and the largest standard one is 1280 by 720 pixels. We run a YouTube thumbnail downloader on this site, its code requests exactly those four files, and the details below come straight from that code.
The Four Thumbnail Formats Behind Every Video
The files live at predictable addresses. The pattern is https://img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEOID/KEY.jpg, where KEY selects the size.
| Key | Pixels | Label in the tool | Shape |
| maxresdefault | 1280x720 | Maximum | 16:9 |
| hqdefault | 480x360 | High | 4:3 |
| mqdefault | 320x180 | Medium | 16:9 |
| sddefault | 640x480 | Standard | 4:3 |
Two facts jump out of this table and both matter in practice.
The list order is not a pixel ranking. The Standard slot holds 640 by 480 while the High slot holds 480 by 360. Read the pixel column, not the label, when you need the sharpest file after maxres.
The shapes differ. maxresdefault and mqdefault are 16:9, while hqdefault and sddefault are 4:3, which follows from dividing the numbers themselves. A 16:9 video letterboxed into a 4:3 frame shows bars in those two files. Pick the key that matches where you plan to place the image.
Which Links the Tool Accepts
The parser recognizes six input forms and rejects everything else with an invalid URL message.
1. youtube.com/watch?v= links
2. youtu.be short links
3. youtube.com/embed/ player links
4. youtube.com/v/ links
5. youtube.com/shorts/ links
6. the bare 11 character video ID, with letters, digits, hyphen, and underscore as the only allowed characters
When the parse succeeds, the tool prints the extracted ID in a green line. Check that ID before you download, because a typo in the URL sometimes still parses into the wrong-but-valid form. A watch URL with no v parameter, a playlist link, or a 10 character ID all fail, and the tool tells you so instead of guessing.
Why the Maximum Format Sometimes Fails
maxresdefault.jpg is generated per video and is simply absent for many uploads. The code handles this honestly. When the image request fails, the onError handler flips a flag, the preview swaps to a gray note saying the resolution is not available, and the download button for that tier disables.
The rule is short. If the Maximum card shows the unavailable note, fall back to the High card at 480 by 360, or to Standard if you prefer the 4:3 shape and more pixels. The other three keys come from the same server and the same pattern, so a failure on maxres tells you nothing bad about them.
What the Download Button Really Does
The button builds a link to the image with a suggested name of thumbnail-VIDEOID-QUALITY.jpg and a target of _blank. The image comes from img.youtube.com, which is a different origin from the page you are on.
Browsers ignore the download attribute for cross-origin files. Expect the click to open the image in a new tab, where you save it with one manual step. That extra click is the real behavior, and any tool telling you otherwise is fronting the same URLs.
Each quality card also carries an external link icon next to the download button. It opens the same image address in a new tab with rel set to noopener. Use it to inspect the file at full size before you commit to saving it.
Editing the URL field resets the error flags on all four tiers, and the clear button does the same. So after one video shows an unavailable tier, paste the next link and every card gets a fresh request. You never need to reload the page between videos.
One more honest point from the tool's own FAQ. These images belong to the channel that published the video. Use them for reference, analysis, and commentary. Get permission before you republish one in your own content.
Checklist
- [ ] You pasted one of the six supported link forms or the 11 character ID.
- [ ] You confirmed the extracted ID shown in the green line.
- [ ] You tried Maximum first and fell back to High or Standard when it showed unavailable.
- [ ] You matched the file shape, 16:9 or 4:3, to where the image will appear.
- [ ] You saved the file manually from the opened tab.
- [ ] You checked usage rights before republishing the image.
Open the [YouTube thumbnail downloader](/en/youtube-thumbnail) and paste a link from a channel you follow. Note which of the four tiers failed and at what upload age, then send us that result. Reports from real videos are the only way to map how often maxresdefault actually exists, and we will publish an update once we have enough of your data points.
