What Port 22 is used for
Port 22 is commonly associated with SSH administration and Git over SSH. The number alone is not enough for diagnosis. Check the protocol, direction, listening process, and network boundary together.
The main risk for this port is password login, weak keys, and public management endpoints. In production, first decide whether the service should exist, then match firewall rules, ingress routing, security groups, and service configuration against the same evidence.
Practical check: verify key-only access, fail2ban rules, and allowed source ranges. Port 21 and Port 23 may belong to different service families, so do not close every port scan finding with the same generic fix.
Port 22 is usually expected on servers, but expected does not mean harmless. The useful question is whether the endpoint accepts passwords, which keys are trusted, which IP ranges can reach it, and whether command history is logged for administrative sessions.
For Git-over-SSH hosts, separate developer access from production shell access. A deploy key that can clone a repository should not automatically imply that the same identity can open an interactive server shell.
Port checklist
- Port 22 has a confirmed TCP, UDP, or dual-protocol requirement.
- The listening process and container are mapped to a service owner.
- Firewall, ingress, and cloud security rules point to the same intended target.
- External exposure includes TLS, authentication, and logging where needed.
